The Heat is On
We all love summer, but we certainly don’t love everything about it. As a greater Nashville homeowner, it can be a toss-up as to which is worse: those sweltering hot days, or the sky-high cool bills they create. But don’t despair! At South Nashville Heating & Cooling, we’re here to help you find the best solutions to solve your summer cooling crisis! Just check out these 5 tips to beat the summer heat below:
5 Tips to Beat the Summer Heat
#1: STRATEGIC USE OF WINDOW TREATMENTS
In other words: Close the curtains! Or blinds, or shutters… According to the US Department of Energy, you can reduce costly midday heat gain from the blazing summer sun by more than 75%, simply through the strategic use of window treatments. Whenever possible, close the curtains during the hours when the sun is at its hottest, typically between 11am and 3pm. While you’re at it, look into specially formulated solar shades, thermal blocking curtains, and solar blocking window tint film to maximize your savings.
#2: REVERSE THE DIRECTION OF YOUR CEILING FAN
Quick Rule of Thumb: Winter = CLOCKWISE / Summer = Counter-Clockwise
A ceiling fan spinning clockwise is great for winter, creating an updraft that pulls warm air from the room below and disperses it throughout the room. This results in an overall warmer feel throughout the room. You want to create the opposite effect in warmer spring and summer months. If your fan is not already circulating in a counter-clockwise direction, change it. You may be surprised at how much difference it makes.
#3: CREATE SHADE FOR YOUR OUTDOOR AC UNIT
The cooler your AC unit is able to remain, naturally, the less work it has to do to generate cooling for your home. The most effective way to achieve this is with placement adjacent to amply mature shade trees. However, if no shade trees of adequate size are available, many homeowners choose to cover their outdoor AC unit with a dark tarp.
#4: SWITCH TO COMPACT FLUORESCENT AND LED LIGHT BULBS
Did you know that a standard incandescent bulb can get as hot as 500 degrees? Multiply that by the number of lights you use any given night in sweltering heat, and you’ve got a clear issue. That’s why substituting compact fluorescent or LED bulbs is a great way to save energy and beat the heat – without cranking up the AC.
#5: REGULAR AC MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR
What’s the BEST way to save money and beat the heat this summer? That’s easy: regular AC inspections, preventive maintenance, and repair. After all, you’ve got a lot of money invested in your home’s cooling system. Why wouldn’t you want to do everything you could to protect your investment? Regular HVAC maintenance prevents costly and avoidable problems, ensures your system is running at peak performance, and helps keep your system running smoothly for as long as possible.
