The Ultimate Guide to Your HVAC System

May 29, 2019Air Conditioning, Heating & Cooling, HVAC, HVAC Tips, Indoor Air QualityBy Webmaster
beat the summer heat

This article will help you to understand your HVAC system from heating and cooling to ventilation.   Whether you are looking to keep your home cozy, warm and comfortable in the brisk winter months or you need to keep your office space cool during the scorching summer months, your HVAC system plays a crucial role in accomplishing both.

Your HVAC system is a combined system that is used to ensure comfortable temperatures in your home or business and maintain appropriate levels of air quality as well.  It is important to understand the role your HVAC system plays in your home’s environment and how they operate throughout in order to have your system perform at peak levels and give you the most for your money.

Your Air Conditioning (Cooling) System

In the hot summer months your HVAC system is responsible for keeping the temperatures in your living space cool and comfortable.  There are a variety of different types of air conditioning units available on the market today, each of which has advantages and disadvantages.  From central air conditioning systems, split AC units, and window AC units, to portable air conditioning units and ductless AC units, each has their own specialized process to cool your home, most of which have similar components.

The cooling system changes gas to liquid while collecting and then expelling heat from your home by way of refrigerant.  A warm refrigerant passes through the system compressor where it is turned into a hot refrigerant vapor that moves through to your system condenser.  The hot vapor becomes cooled when the air generated by the condenser fan passes over the coils turning the gas into a hot liquid.  This hot liquid then creates cool liquid mist that ultimately runs through the system evaporator coil.  As this newly created mist begins to evaporate it also absorbs the heat located on the inside of your home or office and redistributes it to the compressor so as to start the entire process all over again.  The system then pushes the heat that is absorbed outside of your home or office, creating cooler temperatures within the living space.

Your Heating System

Your heating system provides warm temperatures in your home of office during the cooler months.  Today’s heating systems are forced air systems, though many homes and businesses use geothermal systems today as well.  The heat in your home is created at one centralized source and is then distributed evenly throughout your living space.    Forced air systems provide heat by way of a furnace that distributes the heated air throughout your home or office via the ventilation system and specialized ductwork.  Geothermal heating systems use the suns rays absorbed into the ground to generate heat by way of a heat exchanger.

Regardless of the type of system you have in your home or business, it is your HVAC system that provides you with sufficient temperatures in the cold winter months to keep your home, family or employees warm.

Ventilation

Your HVAC system plays a significant role in maintaining the air quality in your home or office.  The primary role of ventilation is to help circulate the air in your space and purify the air as well.  It also controls the moisture in your home or office, alleviates odors and smells, and helps to prevent stagnate dead air.  Depending upon the age of your HVAC system, ventilation is either performed mechanically or by way of fans or units in your windows.

Forced air, HVAC system cleans the air in your space by pulling the conditioned air through air filters. This helps keep allergens and airborne pollutants and other particles out of the air.  With an understanding of your ventilation system you are able to control or at least minimize allergy or other respiratory issues that family members or even employees may suffer from.

Other Important Facts

When choosing your HVAC system, the size you choose matters greatly.  If your HVAC system is too big or too small for your living space or your office space you are apt to see a desperate increase in utility bills.  Either way, too large or too small, your system has to work harder to provide sufficient temperatures in your home or office thereby causing utility bills to grow.   Your HVAC system when properly sized will not only provide sufficient temperatures needed, but will also play an important role in your home or office’s energy efficiency.
