Have you ever heard clicks, snaps, pops, and booms coming from your furnace? If so, then chances are your heating system is not functioning properly and needs some love and care. The team here at South Nashville Heating and Cooling wants to alert our customers to the common signs that indicate your furnace might be in need of a cleaning, repairs or even a replacement.
Don’t Ignore the Signs
If you have noticed any irregularities with your heating system, then be sure not to ignore them, or else you may find yourself without the heat you need at the worst time of all. With that thought in mind, our team wants to share some common signs and sounds that may be telling you that your furnace needs care and attention.
- Ongoing clicking sounds – When you hear clicking sounds it usually means that there is an excessive buildup on your system’s flame sensor. The flame sensor is responsible for communicating with your system as to whether or not the flame is lit. If the flame sensor gets too dirty it will be unable to perform its tasks and thus the clicking sounds would be heard. Our team is on hand to inspect the flame sensor and determine if a cleaning will resolve the problem or if it is necessary to replace the sensor altogether.
- A single boom sound – A single boom means that the burners are dirty and more than likely have a build up of ash and carbon. When the gas is able to break through the existing buildup, it will ignite the furnace with a single boom sound. If you hear such a boom, it is important to reach out to our team right away so the burners can be cleaned to avoid any damage to the furnace.
- A series of booms coupled with rattles and popping sounds – These combined sounds are typically indicators of metal ducts that are loose. Heat travels through the ductwork and expands the metal. If something comes loose within the ductwork you are apt to hear rattling or popping sounds. If this occurs, be sure to reach out to our techs who can tighten the metal ducts and if necessary, add some insulation to minimize any noise issues you may be experiencing.
- A loud grinding and squealing sound– If you notice this sound then more than likely there is an issue with the belt. If the belt becomes worn or is either too loose or too tight, you will hear a squealing noise. Our professionals will come out to your home and adjust the belt and if need be, replace it altogether.
